About the Journal
Ludos International Journal of Games Studies is an international scientific journal of the University of Design, Innovation and Technology (UDIT), developed and promoted by the ECSIT research group: Technology and Innovation from and for Education, Culture and Society.
ECSIT conducts interdisciplinary research focused on the relationship between technology, innovation, education, culture and society, promoting the generation and transfer of knowledge aimed at understanding and transforming contemporary educational, cultural and social contexts.
Within this framework, Ludos International Journal of Games Studies is an editorial initiative specialized in the scientific study of games, play and playful activities and their applications. The journal approaches games and play as phenomena capable of articulating processes of learning, communication, creation, participation, innovation and social transformation, with particular attention to their relationship with contemporary technologies.
The journal's connection with ECSIT provides Ludos International Journal of Games Studies with an interdisciplinary research framework for addressing phenomena such as video games, serious games, gamification, immersive experiences, virtual and augmented reality, virtual worlds and other forms of playful interaction, as well as their applications in education, culture, communication, organizations and society.
Scope and Focus
The journal welcomes original scientific contributions addressing, among other areas:
- video games, serious games and digital games;
- gamification and playful experience design;
- virtual reality, augmented reality, extended reality and immersive experiences;
- the metaverse, virtual worlds and new forms of playful interaction;
- games, education and learning;
- games, communication and culture;
- games, creativity and innovation;
- games and social transformation;
- playful activities applied to organizations, leadership and professional development;
- games, heritage, museums and cultural experiences;
- design, narrative, interaction and user experience in playful contexts; and
- research methodologies and evaluation of playful activities.
Ludos International Journal of Games Studies is aimed at researchers, professors, students, professionals and specialists interested in the scientific study of playful practices and the technologies and methodologies associated with them. The journal seeks to foster interdisciplinary dialogue among the social and communication sciences, humanities, education, design, digital technologies, information sciences and other fields of knowledge related to games and play.
The journal accepts contributions in Spanish and English.
Peer Review Process
Ludos International Journal of Games Studies applies a double-blind peer-review system. All manuscripts received undergo an initial editorial assessment to determine their suitability for the journal's scope and focus and to verify compliance with its formal and ethical publication requirements.
Manuscripts that pass the initial assessment are sent to at least two experts in the relevant subject area, preferably external to the publishing institution. Reviewers assess, among other aspects, the originality and relevance of the research, the strength of the theoretical framework, methodological appropriateness, the quality of the analysis and discussion, the scientific contribution, and compliance with principles of research integrity.
In cases of substantial disagreement between reviewers, the editorial team may request an additional review. Reviewers may recommend acceptance, acceptance subject to revisions, further peer review, or rejection.
When revisions are requested, authors must respond to the reviewers' comments and submit a revised version of the manuscript. Further rounds of review may be conducted when necessary to ensure the scientific quality of the publication.
The final decision to accept or reject a manuscript rests with the editorial team of Ludos International Journal of Games Studies, taking into account the reviewers' reports and the journal's scientific and editorial criteria.
The estimated review period is a maximum of four months, subject to reviewer availability and the characteristics of each manuscript.
Open Access and Publication Fees
Ludos International Journal of Games Studies is committed to promoting open access to scientific knowledge and facilitating the international dissemination of research on games, play and playful activities.
Published content will be made available in open access in accordance with the editorial policy and publishing license established by UDIT.
The journal does not charge authors any fees for manuscript processing, editing or publication. There are no article processing charges (APCs) or submission fees.
Indexing and Visibility
Ludos International Journal of Games Studies will work to establish a progressive presence in relevant national and international information systems, directories, catalogues and indexing services related to the journal's fields of knowledge.
Information concerning the journal's indexing status and quality indicators will be updated periodically as evaluations and admissions are obtained.
Originality and Anti-Plagiarism Policy
Manuscripts submitted to Ludos International Journal of Games Studies must be original and unpublished and must not be simultaneously under consideration by another journal or publication.
All submitted manuscripts may undergo originality checks using text-similarity detection tools. These checks are intended to prevent plagiarism, self-plagiarism and other practices that are contrary to research integrity.
When indications of plagiarism, manipulation of results, unauthorized appropriation of ideas or other forms of misconduct are identified, the editorial team will act in accordance with international standards of publication ethics and, in particular, the recommendations of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE).
Publication Ethics and Good Practices
Ludos International Journal of Games Studies is committed to the principles of integrity, transparency, responsibility and scientific rigor throughout all stages of the editorial process.
The journal promotes good practices concerning authorship, conflicts of interest, methodological transparency, responsible data management and availability, peer review, originality, and the correction of errors in published works.
Authors, reviewers and members of the editorial team are expected to act in accordance with principles of research integrity and the ethical policies established by the journal and UDIT.
Ludos International Journal of Games Studies follows relevant international guidelines and recommendations for scientific publishing, including those developed by the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE).
Artificial Intelligence
Ludos International Journal of Games Studies recognizes that generative artificial intelligence tools and other algorithmic technologies may form part of contemporary research, analysis, creation and scientific communication processes. Their use must be responsible, transparent and consistent with principles of academic and research integrity.
Artificial intelligence tools cannot be considered authors of a manuscript. Authors remain fully responsible for all content submitted, including data, arguments, references, images, results and conclusions.
When generative artificial intelligence tools are used during the research or preparation of a manuscript, authors must disclose such use in accordance with the editorial guidelines of Ludos International Journal of Games Studies. The use of these tools does not exempt authors from verifying the accuracy, originality and provenance of the generated information.
Ludos International Journal of Games Studies may establish specific restrictions on the use of artificial intelligence depending on the purpose for which it has been used and on current international recommendations concerning scientific publishing.
Copyright
Authors retain the moral rights to their work and are responsible for ensuring that manuscripts submitted to Ludos International Journal of Games Studies are original, that all necessary permissions have been obtained for the use of third-party material, and that no intellectual property rights are infringed.
Terms concerning the licensing of the economic rights in published articles shall be established in accordance with UDIT's editorial policy and the Creative Commons license adopted by the journal.
Published articles must appropriately identify the authorship, the original publication in Ludos International Journal of Games Studies, and the corresponding institutional affiliation.
Digital Preservation and Self-Archiving
Ludos International Journal of Games Studies will establish digital preservation mechanisms designed to ensure the long-term availability and accessibility of its published content.
The journal encourages authors to deposit and self-archive their published works in institutional and subject repositories, in accordance with the conditions established in its copyright and self-archiving policies.
Specific self-archiving conditions, including permitted versions, embargo periods and attribution requirements, will be established in the journal's editorial policy.
Content License
Content published by Ludos International Journal of Games Studies will be made available under a Creative Commons license, in accordance with the open-access policy defined by UDIT.
The applicable license will permit the reuse of published content under the terms established by the corresponding Creative Commons license, provided that appropriate credit is given to the authors, the original publication in Ludos International Journal of Games Studies, and the applicable terms of use.
