Description
PULSE was created to overturn the exclusivity of Serrano Street, creating a "third space" for musical creation where culture stops being a privilege of consumption and therefore becomes a universal and free right of access. The foundation of a music center at 130 Serrano Street in Madrid, addresses a urban paradox: a high density of young people with a complete lack of freely accessible social infrastructure and space. Located at the heart of a "Student Hub" due to the academic activity of IE University and the CSIC (Spanish National Research Council), the area around the Casa de Villora attracts many national and international students between the ages of 18 and 30 every day.. However, this group of people is absorbed by an urban space that is predominantly luxury commercial or privately owned residential, creating a void where spontaneous, non- economical interaction is virtually nonexistent. In this context, the proposal is justified not only as a architectural renovation but also as a strategic intervention to provide a "third space" for a group that demands places of belonging and expression that go beyond the strictly academic or consumer spheres.
Faced with this urban isolation, the PULSE project emerges as an incentive for creative equality, using music as a universal language to unite a currently dispersed young community that is becoming even more detached because of digitalization . The idea is to make technical production tools like recording equipment and high-fidelity listening spaces available to everyone, especially in areas where the high cost of creative services keeps people from using them. The proposal transforms a private heritage site into a place for free cultural production by adapting Bergamín's rationalist structure and changing it to fit a logic of resonance and public openness. The new building's significance stems from its ability to function as a "heart," radiating activity into its environnment, thereby transforming its historical exclusivity into a dynamic social space that encourages collaboration and exchange in a historically secluded area of Madrid.
