Description
This paper investigates the Sammelband Papi (1566–1572, R.G.Dir.Can.II.181) with particular attention to the bull for the reformed breviary published in 1568 (R.G.Dir.Can.II.181, int. 112). Rather than offering a textual analysis of the bull itself, the study focuses on the papal secretaries whose signatures appear in these documents, with the aim of reconstructing the administrative process through which liturgical reform was authorized and enacted.
By comparing the bull preserved in the sammelband with the earliest printed copies of the reformed breviary, it becomes possible to identify and follow the individuals who sanctioned the process in the Secretaria Brevium. These signatures provide a valuable entry point into the curial machinery that supported the implementation of the reform. While these officials were not directly connected to the printers of the breviary, their actions determined the bureaucratic framework within which printing and dissemination could take place.
This approach highlights an often-overlooked dimension of liturgical history: the role of mid-level curial agents in shaping the circulation of reform through routine acts of administration. It also offers a more nuanced understanding of how papal authority operated in practice during the late sixteenth century, by tracing the concrete hands—secretaries and signatories—who left their marks on the documents that accompanied one of the most significant liturgical transformations of the early modern period.
