Description

ABSTRACT Through a multidisciplinary study of Superkilen, a park in Copenhagen, I investigate how design influences people’s behaviour. I study if it’s flexible, integrative and adapts to people’s needs; If it is used as a living room, kitchen or classroom, as a third place for different people to meet to socialize and coexist. It is appreciated how a simple design, with specific characteristics can be essential when creating spaces for coexistence: furniture adapted to social activity, a spatial layout that allows different groupings, varied materials, light control, visibility and clear limits, and accessibility and connectivity. Furniture design, seating arrangements, materials and colours, lighting, visibility and accessibility influence how people sit, how they talk and whether they stay to eat. More importantly, design decisions influence how people interact with each other, the types of groups they form and spaces that are used, what activities take place, and other subtle details. All of this contributes to creating a convivial space from which all users can benefit.
