Description
The project proposes a Centre for Research into Cognitive Development based on the principles of biophilia, understood as the natural connection between humans and nature. Based on an analysis of the existing building, a rational, modular steel structural system has been developed which contrasts with the organic and sensory dimension of the biophilic design, creating a dialogue between the artificial and the natural. The building is completely hollowed out whilst retaining its structure and façade—as the skeleton and skin of the rationalist movement—and this modular steel structure is incorporated; thanks to its own strength, it can easily create spaces. The centre is conceived not only as a research space, but also as an urban sanctuary focused on mental wellbeing, offering environments of calm and rest in contrast to the stress of contemporary life. To this end, it incorporates strategies such as vertical vegetation with species capable of emitting phytoncides beneficial to health, as well as fractal patterns inspired by nature, which aid concentration and reduce anxiety. Each space is designed to encourage direct interaction with plants and learning about their properties, transforming the building into a therapeutic and experimental environment that highlights the relationship between nature, health and cognitive development.
